3:4 and 1:7
Group show at St.Gertrud Pfarrkirche in Cologne
08.12.2023-13.12.2023

Initiated by James Grünfeld and Moreno Schweikle

This exhibit presents the first in a series of scale experiments, focusing on the relationship between object and architecural ratio. Sourced from the exhibition's location, a detail of a candle holder, an original architectural element by Gottfried Böhm fromSankt Gertrud Pfarrkirche sets the base dimensions for the works presented in the first edition of this series: 29cm x 21cm x 17cm. Artists are invited to present a fragment, an existing work, or a new creation that fits the physical parameters for the inaugural edition of 3:4 and 1:7.

The concept was realised and inspired, in part, through the writings of Dom Hans Van Der Laan and his 'Plastic Number Theory'. Also referred to as the 'The Radiant Number' by engineer Gerard Cordonnier, which outlines 'the limits of the human ability to percieve differences in size, and relating one physical size to another among three-dimensional objects'.By challenging a space with 'alien' objects but in fitting to this inherent scale of the architecure.

The presentation is seen as a confronting of the concept while also serving as a proof. Does a sculpture 'fitting' a space use it to its advantage, or does it stand even more at odds?
